ABOUT THE BOOK
It is the year 1799, on the Gold Coast of West Africa. Kojo, a skilled and brave fishermen lives in the budding metropolis of Accra. His large daily catches of fish attract Chief Akaddo’s young wife who Kojo has a love affair with.
The enraged Chief Akaddo sells Kojo to Captain Chase of the Yankee whaler, Exodus. Kojo finds himself enslaved on a Jamaican plantation where he becomes skilled at making rum.
Determined to be free, Kojo hatches a plan to steal back his woman and child and sail to Boston on the Judith, a tiny fishing boat he built to feed his fellow slaves.
Fighting pirates, the British Navy, slave patrols, hurricanes and plague, Kojo once again tastes freedom on the high seas.
Kojo grows wealthy from making his Liberia Rum and trading in Saltfish. He uses his riches to free his fellow slaves in both body and mind. Kojo and his fellow pilgrims set sail back to Africa where they endeavor to create a new nation that any former slave is free to come to, settle and prosper.
